Shatner reveals Star Trek XI secrets?
I'm starting to get a little tired of the Star Trek XI rumours, and the latest comes from William Shatner again as he talks about his role, the writing and where Kirk is in the whole story. Apparently he's revealing what J.J. Abrams would rather keep quiet.
According to comments in a story on Sci Fi Wire, he's revealed more than he should, here's what he had to say:
"I met with J.J., and they told me they would like me to be part of their film, but they have to write the role...we know the story is based on young Kirk...They need to figure out how to put the dead captain in with the young captain...It's a very complex, technical problem of how to write the character in, and I'm not sure how they will solve it."
So there you go, he is looking to return as the old Kirk and in some way that will put him alongside the young Kirk of which the story does seem to be about. I am disappointed.
Not that Shatner is looking to play the old Kirk, but that the story is going back to Kirk at all. I'd like it to be a total break and reinvention like the Enterprise series, a series which is very good and was getting better all the time. Another great show falls fowl of accountants.
I'd really have liked to have seen that complete departure, but then I'm thinking what Abrams did with the Mission Impossible franchise on MI:III and how he really turned that around and breathed new life into it while retaining the original characters and structure, could he do that here? Sure enough the MI franchise was much younger and more focused than Star Trek and had experienced a much less bumpier ride, but still.
