Boyle's South African story Ponte Tower
Danny Boyle is getting ready for his next film which will be a joint venture between the UK and South Africa. Called Ponte Tower, it is loosely adapted by Michael Thomas from the book by German author Norman Ohler.
The thriller will be set beneath Ponte Tower which not only carries the largest illuminated Coca-Cola sign in the world but is also a tower which was originally built to represent the affluence of old South Africa. It grew to represent the growing changes in the country and then by the end of apartheid it was one of the most dangerous addresses in the world.
According to the UK Film Council press release the thriller will be funded from their Development Fund (this is where it is being well spent).
The novel is called Ponte City and tells the story of a girl called Lucy who moves into Ponte City in the early 1990's where everyone gathers expecting a piece of the wealth that the tower represents, however there's none to be found, just a bitter struggle for survival. She befriends a local gangster who persuades her to courier drugs to the US where she is caught. Years later she returns to settle her score.
