De Niro talks three Good Shepherds

RobertDeNiro.jpgI already wrote about De Niro wanting a Good Shepherd sequel, mainly because he wanted to do a different time period for the film, rather than filming the story of the conception of the CIA and the character of James Jesus Angleton, he wanted to deal with the time from the 1970's until the fall of the Berlin wall, a much richer period from the book.

He again confirms this and says that he'd even like to extend the story into a third film from the end of the Cold War, Communism and into the Iraq war, ambitious indeed. The story comes from Variety, and if he's serious we could expect to see three very strong stories

De Niro said he'd "love" to do a second part, taking the story from 1961 to 1989, from around when the Berlin Wall went up until it came down.

Pausing only briefly, De Niro added that he'd even like to do a third part, taking the story from the fall of communism to the present, up to Iraq even.

I could see him doing more of these films, and I have higher hopes for The Good Shepherd than the US certainly showed after its December release.

Just to give you a taster of how strong it is, Time Out Film carry an exclusive clip of Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie showing a complete lack of tact and a wonderful Freudian slip (I can't think of that without thinking of D.O.A. - I dare you to make the connection!).

Good Shepherd is a film with problems (of which the unnecessary overlength is one), but it's one of a very few films I can think of where a sequel could actually be justified. BUT—and it's a big but—I don't think it'd work with the same characters from the first film.
