Downey joins Stiller's Tropic Thunder
We heard how Ben Stiller wanted Tom Cruise for his comedy Tropic Thunder that copies Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest so well, that wasn't to be though, and today we hear who he has managed to secure for the film. Robert Downey Jr.
An announcement out today reveals that Downey will play Kirk Lazarus, the greatest actor of his generation and four time Oscar winner, with Jay Baruchel playing an unknown actor Kevin Sandusky. Stiller, Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen have written the screenplay but no word yet on the director.
Together, with the rest of their acting crew, are mistaken for real commandos instead of the ones they are playing in a big budget war movie in the middle of a jungle somewhere. They are obviously pulled into the war to fight for some village who can't defend themselves and despite their failings and not actually being real commandos we'll see them save the day no doubt.
I'm hoping that there's something more to the story from The Hollywood Reporter than simply taking the idea from these two films that have covered it so well already and transporting it to a different setting. Seemingly Downey thinks so, unless he's in it for the cash again. Nope, I can't stop shaking the feeling that this has been done already, and done well.
