Grindhouse to cost double for foreign audiences
It seems that the recent concern over splitting Grindhouse into two films isn't quite as true as would at first seem. It's only happening in countries that are non-English speaking.
The reasoning behind it all seems to be that the idea of a double-bill feature is unknown to many film audiences around the world, well that's according to Variety through Solace in Cinema. I'm sure they are quite familiar with it after seeing the teasers and trailer that explain exactly what it's all about, however.
When split, the two pics will be titled "Grindhouse: Planet Terror" (Rodriguez's seg) and "Grindhouse: Death Proof" (Tarantino's). With the split, some additional footage could be added to each one.
Variety states. Yes, could be added, it doesn't say it will. The plans of the Weinstein Company are that the two films would be released between three and five months apart, and they are considering what to do with the fake trailers which will be shown between the two films in English speaking countries where it is released as a double bill.
All sounds a bit more complicated than needed. As they say it will allow a double revenue earner, and in a way I'm surprised that this isn't the route being taken for the worldwide DVD release. I can understand the explanation they give, but at the same time it's not rocket science to explain what it's all about at the start of the showing.
Solace in Cinema points to an online petition being run to try and change this decision so that foreign audiences can see it just like English speaking audiences, for the price of one ticket. You can sign here. Solace also have a large version of the possible final Grindhouse poster.
