McAvoy reveals Wanted details
There's an interview with James McAvoy, the Scottish actor who delivered a blistering performance in The Last King of Scotland (Filmstalker review), has revealed a little more about the upcoming comic adaptation of the excellent Wanted from Mark Millar, another Scottish talent.
In a recent interview over at Coming Soon, he says that they don't yet know who will be playing the female lead, but they are getting closer to choosing, and he reveals why he wanted to play the part:
...the reason I wanted to play this character in "Wanted" was because it still adheres to what I believe in, that heroes shouldn't always be perfect. We shouldn't always have the six-foot-five, chiseled-jawed, good-looking guy. That's why it's so good that Spider-Man is somebody like Tobey Maguire, and that's why I took this role.
What's funny is how he got the role. He says that he was passed over once because he was too geeky, and when they couldn't find a muscular type to fit the part they came back to him.
They wanted someone geeky. I screen-tested for the movie over a year ago and they never gave me the part. Then, it was about seven months later when they went, "Look, we've been trying to find someone who's muscle-y who looks good and all that, but it just didn't work with someone like that so they said, "Could you come and do it?" They basically just said, "You're the runt of the litter and that's what makes it work" so yeah, and that's why I like it. So while I'm doing all this physical work, it's important for me to remain small. I'm sure they want me to get all big, but it's important to remain believably geeky.
That's quite right, in the beginning anyway. The character has to seem that he's not a superhero until later on in the story, and even then I think it might work without him physically being that way. He says he might be wearing a hoodie throughout the film, I hope however that we do see a costume appear at some point.
Is anyone else out there as excited as I am to see Wanted coming to the big screen?
