Metal Gear Solid will be a film

MetalGearSolid.jpgMetal Gear Solid is becoming a film, that has been confirmed by Sony who announced that Michael De Luca will produce the adaptation with the games creator Hideo Kojima as an executive producer.

This has been talked about for ages, but finally we're going to see it come through, if all goes well that is. There's not word on who will write or direct the film but it's good that they have the creator on board, the question is does he have any input?

Well with Sony and Columbia behind it I think there's a chance that it will happen and that Kojima might well have some say to keep the film following the same track as the game franchise. After all if this works and fans walk over to the film, then they are guaranteed a big audience and a lucrative franchise.

According to the figures from Variety MGS has sold more than twenty million games since 1998. It mixes stealth with cinematical sequences, and a rich storyline filled with political intrigue and fabulously rich characters.

My only faulting of the games is that they rely on the bigger, badder boss method of gameplay which I particularly hate. Just drop in someone physically bigger and tougher after a section of normal gameplay. I find that part of it particularly unimaginative, so it's good that the film can't replicate that annoying experience.

I tell you what else won't work in the film if they're doing it seriously, that box!

So gameplay aside, I still think Kurt Russell is ideal for this role.

i will say it before anyone else does - the games are practically a movie anyway : all those cut scenes! anyway, the structuring of the games, the mood that you end up with is something quite close to japanese movies and unless they americanise the plot and pacing they'll end up with something that disappoints. if you play them in japanese (which i always have - don't care for the dialogue, and the atmosphere's far superior that way) and concentrate on the authenticity of the relationship to the games and how they work really, and don't place unreal or unsual expectations on how well it's working then it would suit as an adaptation but alienate most familiar with it. watch something like 'casshern', which has its fans and its detractors, and you'll see how MGS might turn into a film : visually stunning, oddly paced, long, slow, moody, almost non-sensical and inconsequential, but feels strangely deep too... but play them in american dialogue and with those cut scenes and boss battles (which, if you compare to an anime episode for example, you'll see the imbalance isn't quite as odd as it first seems - the paces shift around a lot) and it's just plain odd... confused, i am, by the need or desire to make this movie.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater still stands for me as one of the best cinematic games I have ever played. I and my co-writer at eGamer, Nionix, fully believe that a movie adaptation does not need to be made in order to fully capture the story that is MGS. This is just a business decision made to capitalize on the games' success. If you really want to see a MGS movie, as noted above, you should just play the game.

Also, I happen to like the bosses in the games and one of the most enjoyable parts of MGS 3 was the fight between Snake and The End. It was long, it was engaging, and it was doable. It was everything I love about a good boss fight and fit right into the MGS universe. I can understand why you think it takes you out of the game, Richard, but I'm telling you there is another perspective to be presented. Which, of course, I am more than happy to give you. =)
