Scanners remake by Saw creator?
I find it hard to believe that Scanners was only made in 1981, but it was, and now Hollywood are remaking it. First David Cronenberg's The Fly and now this.
The word is that the writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman, one of the creators of the successful and quite inventive Saw franchise is once again in negotiations to direct a remake of the Cronenberg classic with exploding heads in abundance.
According to Bloody Disgusting, who also say Variety has confirmed the story, David Goyer will write the screenplay for the remake.
Bousman is indeed a busy man, but I kind of like the idea of remaking this cult classic horror. There are effects that could be made much, much better, and more over the top scenes, as if Scanners didn't have enough of either.
The film is about a group of people who have gained telekinetic powers after their mothers took an experimental drug during pregnancy. The drug caused them to do develop the powers and in adulthood it allows them to do various things from read people's minds, to moving objects, and to making people's heads explode - that scene is a superb moment and BD have a great shot of it along with the story, be warned it's graphic and very real for an eighties film.
The group are now outcasts from society, and like most stories there is a good faction and a bad faction, one that believes that they are the dominating power. That faction is led by one Darryl Revok played by Michael Ironside, who probably has the time of his life playing the psychotic who drills a hole in his own head to let out the voices!
This is a great film, and I find myself thinking that it could be done really well and be quite deserving of a remake. What do you think? Could a remake do something good for the film? Should Cronenberg let it be remade?
