L.A. Confidential 2 versus White Jazz

GeorgeClooney.jpgJoe Carnahan has just written about the LA Confidential 2 film on his blog, the sequel to L.A. Confidential. No, not White Jazz, the film he is directing from his brother's script, Matthew Michael Carnahan. No, these are two very different films despite having the same characters.

Okay, I'm confused myself, so let's rewind. White Jazz is the fourth in the quartet of books by James Ellroy, L.A. Confidential is the third in the series with The Black Dahlia and The Big Nowhere being first and second respectively.

Okay I am confused then. It appears that L.A. Confidential 2 is going to be a film script follow up to the original film and will feature the characters of Captain Dudley Smith, Officer Bud White and Detective Lieutenant Ed Exley, and Ellroy has already been asked to come on board and help create it.

New Regency owns the rights to these characters and the stories, so they are pushing ahead with this new film sequel while Carnahan moves forward on the adaptation to the actual novel sequel from Ellroy which is White Jazz. Following now?

New Regency have also asked the White Jazz production to rename the characters, so they have had to alter the script which did refer to the characters from L.A. Confidential and make it a completely stand alone story.

Carnahan promises us that his brother's script is superb, an...

...absolute knockdown, drag-out version...

...and that stylistically both films will be wildly different. He does say that both Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce are set to return for the Confidential sequel, and while he would have liked to have Pearce star in White Jazz, it just isn't possible now.

So onto George Clooney and a tale that's now somewhat distanced from the L.A. quartet of stories from Ellroy, and Regency are off to create a brand new story for the Confidential sequel. It all sounds a bit messy and knee jerk from them.
