Lives of Others up for remake already?
What are the Weinstein's or indeed Hollywood on? Not content in remaking films that have only been out a few years, they are now remaking films that have just won an Oscar! It looks like they could be lining up The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) as a remake, the film just won the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars last week.
Okay, it's not strictly that film that the Weinstein Company has secured, it's actually the entire catalogue of the Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella company Mirage for the next three years, that currently includes The Lives of Others, The Reader, I Don't Know How She Does It, The Amulet of Samarkand, and The Ninth Life of Louis Drax.
The deal, as described in Variety, means that the Weinstein Company gets first look at everything they do, that means they can get first refusal, and acceptance. So it probably does mean that The Lives of Others is up for a remake as soon as it stops earning money on the tail of its Oscar win. Of course it might take the whole deal a good while to go through and then to make the film, but the intention is there.
The remake window is getting shorter and shorter.
