Shyamalan's new script picked up
It's not all bad for M. Night Shyamalan as we hear that the Hollywood studios haven't totally abandoned him after an ill received film, now 20th Century Fox have picked up his R rated film The Green Effect, which is now titled The Happening.
I previously wrote about how his script wasn't well received, and an internet review of it was giving it much praise, especially since it was so R rated, but no one was picking it up. Well that appears to have changed as we hear the news from Rope of Silicon that it's been picked up.
According to them Shyamalan told Variety:
...that several studios were interested but he decided on Fox thanks to exec Tom Rothman's enthusiasm and "because the studio has demonstrated acumen in marketing similar apocalyptic fare like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow." Night was quoted saying, "One palpable change in the film was the decision to dial up the scare factor, thus inviting the R rating."
I find this great news, and I'm glad that Shyamalan is getting to continue. When so much dross is being churned out by the same people time and time again I find it disheartening that someone tries to do something different and is knocked back harder and harder each time. I'm a big fan of his, and although I didn't love The Village as much as I did Unbreakable, it was still very good. No, I haven't seen Lady in the Water yet, but I will, and if I don't like it, I won't be calling for him to be banned from Hollywood.
It'll be interesting to see where he goes with this R rated film, and just how much the studio allow him to go with that hard rating.
