Chow Yun-Fat leaves Woo's The Battle of Red Cliff

ChowYun-Fat.jpgJohn Woo's The Battle of Red Cliff has just received a big blow. Previously I wrote about the rumour that Tony Leung was leaving the film, well now it seems that Chow Yun-Fat has departed the production.

Interestingly the original rumour that Leung had left hasn't been confirmed, and it may still remain as rumour as reports are that he is still attached while Chow Yun-Fat is the one that is leaving. In a statement from Sina.com through Monkey Peaches and Coming Soon he says:

According to a statement Chow Yun-Fat sent to Sina.com, Chow resigned from John Woo’s The Battle of Red Cliff last Friday not because of some unrealistic demands from him. Chow received the screenplay just one week before and the production had already begun. This gave him very little time to prepare for his role as he had to deliver his lines in Mandarin...Chow also hoped this incident would not affect his friendship with John Woo and producer Terence Chang.

He does state that there was no reason for leaving other than just not having the time to prepare and it does sound genuine. So with the word that Leung is still on board but Yun-Fat isn't, is there any real issue with the film or will it just find another star and move on? I think the latter.
