Smith talks horror Red State
Kevin Smith has revealed the plot of his next film, the much touted horror film. There won't be any laughs in this one and it sounds very interesting.
The film will be called Red State and will draw from the cult of Fred Phelps, the Phelps family and the bizarre Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. They have a hugely homophobic bent (if you can see the irony in the use of the word) and have been picketing the funerals of US soldiers from Iraq to garner media interviews and promote their "views".
From an interview over at Rotten Tomatoes through Bloody Disgusting he says:
"The movie's called 'Red State' and it's very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It's certainly not Phelps himself but it's very much inspired by a Phelps figure."
Interestingly he also talks about the definition of horror, and it seems that although this film is being classed as horror, it may not be in the conventional use of the genre title.
"It's weird because for a few months I've been saying 'horror movie' and technically it is, but it's also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, 'Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?' It'd be much easier to just show it to them when I'm done and be like, 'This is what I meant.' At which point I'm sure there'll be people saying, 'This ain't a horror movie!' But to me, it is."
Well I am confused, but I think I know where he's aiming. Earlier he says that horror is about the build up to the death scene, the death scene is the pay off shot in horror and the build up is by far the more horrific part.
So arguing the genre classification aside, it does sound like a great topic to cover, a cult controlled state, a cult which is particularly extreme with its views and perhaps actions. Do you think Smith can pull it off?
