Mike Tyson documentary gets Director

MikeTyson.jpgJames Toback is the an set to direct a feature documentary of the fighter Mike Tyson, a film that will show the fighter from his uprising in the ring and his complete self-destruction outside of it.

James Toback has long been connected with Tyson and has included him in a few of his own films, but it was when he completed rehab that he and Toback decided that the story should be told.

Toback's comments over at Variety tell us that this isn't going to be glossed over.

"The point is not to polish his image or make a cinematic apology, but rather to get a firsthand look at a very complex and epic story...He was honest about all the things that have highlighted his life, from the bitter divorce, the ear-biting, prison, to his becoming a sex addict. He is self-aware, smart and a totally fractured personality, and he made himself completely vulnerable."

Tyson meanwhile says that he is humbled that Toback has given him the opportunity to be involved in the project, and that he intends the account to be honest and truthful.

Although I'm not a fan of Tyson, for the very reasons that mark his downfall, I think this documentary could well turn his image around. Honest and open portrayals in documentaries can be very painful for the focus of the films, but it can also mark a very healthy and healing moment on their part.

Of course not to mention the fact that this will be a much sought after film and that with Tyson involved it could help him personally. I don't happen to know what state the fighter is in with his life at the moment, but he's certainly not at the lofty heights of World Champion.
