Rodriguez remaking Barbarella

RobertRodriguez.jpgRobert Rodriguez has just hit me with the strangest choice ever. He's signed up to direct the remake of the 1968 film Barbarella, the classic sexually aware film starring Jane Fonda as a space spy who uses her sexuality at every possible turn.

I actually thought that there was no way the story could make it nowadays as it was firmly routed in its time. It's a product of the free sexuality of the sixties. So seeing it translated into modern cinema is going to be interesting.

I honestly thought it couldn't be done, but if anyone has a crack at it I think it might well be Robert Rodriguez don't you think? Over at Variety he has something to say about remaking Barbarella.

"I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe."

You certainly do have a challenge there. First of all who is iconic and sexy enough to replace Jane Fonda, secondly is how to make the story work. Right now he's working with the writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the Casino Royale (Filmstalker review) writers. Now that is a mix indeed.
