Commando gets Director's Cut
I don't apologise for being a huge Arnie fan, I love some of his films and Predator is probably one of my favourite action films. Now an earlier film is set to get a welcome DVD treatment, Commando is to get a Director's Cut with previously unseen footage, five minutes of it.
The new, as yet unrated film, is recut by the original Director Mark L. Lester and carries over five minutes of never before seen footage (I always find that's an incredibly bold claim of a film!) added into the film. The DVD will also carry the original theatrical release.
Here's the listing for the Region 1 DVD release, not high-definition I'm afraid:
1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
English DD5.1 Surround
French (Stereo) and Spanish (Mono) audio
French and Spanish subtitles
Seamlessly branched Director's Cut with never-before-seen footage
Audio commentary by director Mark Lester (on theatrical version only)
Deleted Scenes
Pure Action featurette
Let Off Some Steam featurette
Photo galleries with over 150 images
The news from DVD Times is superb to say the least, and while I may be the only one excited by this news I thought I would write about it just the same.
Commando is a great eighties action film. Arnold Schwarzenneger plays Colonel Matrix, an elite soldier who is retired and living in the hills with his daughter. One of his former soldiers is hired by an exiled Dictator to kidnap Matrix's daughter and use her to force him into assassinating the new President of the Dictator's former country.
However Matrix doesn't see it like that, and instead he decides that there's only one course of action, that of attack. He goes about tracking down his daughter, and in the process killing each and every one of the men involved.
I love that quote of his…
"Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?"
"That's right, Matrix. You did."
"I lied."
…or…
"Can you tell me what this is all about?"
"Yeah, a guy I trusted for years wants me dead."
"That's understandable. I've only known you for five minutes and I want you dead, too."
…okay, enough with the quotes already! I'll have to add them to the database. I love this film, it's great fun and a superb example of action films that were real action films, when men were men and women were, well, women! I'm putting this on my wishlist for sure. Any other Commando fans out there?
