Fishburne writes and directs Coelho's The Alchemist

LaurenceFishburne.jpgLaurence Fishburne has written a screenplay, and is set to direct, the film version of Paulo Coelho's novel The Alchemist (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com).

The story is about a shepherd boy in Spain who one night dreams of treasure in the Egyptian pyramids and so just gets up the next morning and heads off in search of his dream. On the way he encounters different characters who help shape him and his dreams, until he meets an alchemist and becomes his pupil to learn not just about metals, but about himself.

The book has sold over forty million copies worldwide and now Variety Laurence Fishburne is set to direct his own adaptation of the story for the big screen for Warner Brothers.

It's a huge novel, and a mammoth one for Fishburne to have come forward to write and direct for his second outing in both areas, his first being Once in the Life some seven years ago. However with such a talented onscreen actor, I think he might well be able to pull it off, after all Warner Brothers think so too.

This is one of my favorite books, but IMHO does it REALLY need a film adaptation, just read the book!

Why do they keep doing this? Getting superheroes for the movies is fine, put some dinosaurs and whales on film, the better... but Coelho's work on the big screen? There's a reason why he's a writer. The Alchemist is one of the most moving novels out there. Yes, movies can be highly inspiring too, but The Alchemist doesn't need a film adaptation. It just doesn't. Yer right Simone, and it will not ever. MAKTUB.

MAKTUB indeed!
