Some are calling this another sign of doom for Indiana Jones IV, but not me. Sean Connery is not joining the fourth film, and instead John Hurt is on board.

There have been plenty of reasons why Indiana Jones IV isn't looking that good so far, but the news that Sean Connery isn't returning to the series doesn't make much of a dent for me, in fact it might be more promising.

As we've seen with so many other franchises, when the films roll on the character numbers increase, the story dilutes, and we lose the reason it was so strong in the beginning, here we're losing ancillary characters, and that's what Sean Connery was.

Sure, he was a great choice and played his father well, but that storyline is over, and this film is going to be packed with characters - that is if the rumours are true - so isn't it a good thing? This could mean that the story could focus on Indy and his son. Having the father in there could just dilute the main story even more.

The official news from Paramount Pictures through Coming Soon has the news of John Hurt coming on board with Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and Shia LeBeouf. The majority of the press release is going over the careers of these big stars, however the end of it has a comment from Sean Connery himself who says all the right things about the production.

"I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun."

He goes on to say how great everyone is and all that stuff, but what strikes me is the huge u-turn right in the middle of his statement. If he loves working with them, and this is the only thing that could pull him out of retirement, then why isn't he?

Ach well, doesn't really matter. Here's to the aging Indy and whoever John Hurt is going to be playing, thankfully it won't be his father.
