Thundercats set for film adaptation
Do you remember the cartoon series on TV called Thundercats? Does that spark off the theme tune in your head almost immediately? Well now the series is heading for the big screen and in live action no less. Oh yes, you heard right, a live action version of Thundercats.
The story, if you can remember, is about a group of humanoid creatures that have a distinct cat-like appearance who are stranded on a planet called Third Earth. They had to flee their own planet, Thundera, after it was destroyed, and they crash landed without means of escape. While there they have to battle an evil sorcerer called Mumm-Ra who is trying to kill them.
Most memorable from the series is the theme tune and that cry by Lion-O, the leader of the Thundercats, "Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats are go!" and on every cry of the word Thunder his sword would get a little bigger. Mmmm. The sword also carries a big symbol called the Eye of Thundera, which seemed to have many properties that often managed to get them out of a sticky situation.
Remember it now? The other members of the group were Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara, and that evil Mumm-Ra was pretty tough as villains go.
Variety are reporting that a script by Paul Sopocy has been picked up by Warner Brothers, and that now gives them He-Man and Teen Titans comic projects.
I would expect a few rewrites yet, so there's a while before we see something coming out of it, but could this eighties cartoon work on live action and big screen? Cat like characters fighting on a non-Earth world?
