Enter the Dragon remake begins
You know remakes are going too far when they start eyeing films that just can't be remake, such as Pink Panther. Well how about Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon? That's the next one on the remake list.
Kurt Sutter, an Executive Producer on the excellent The Shield and writer of The Punisher 2 script, has taken up the challenge to rewrite the classic Bruce Lee film. Like the better Hollywood remakes though he has some serious changes in mind, first with the title which will now be called Awaken the Dragon.
According to his comments through Variety, he's planning to set it in the shady world of underground fighting.
“I'm a huge noir fan, and this plot lends itself to the film I want to make...I wanted to set it in these underground fight clubs where the action is really raw and expose the brutality of Shaolin kung fu. This will be more 'Raging Bull' than 'Crouching Tiger' in its viciousness.”
It appears that his plot will be modernised with a lone FBI agent chasing a rogue Shaolin monk (what's a Shaolin monk gone rogue like? Does he kick the Shaolin football out of the park everytime?) into the underground world of martial arts fight clubs. The plan is to discover a new star for the role of the monk and to cast a known actor in the FBI role.
It sounds like the plot modernisation part for Awaken the Dragon has it right, it's changing the story enough to be radically different from the classic Bruce Lee film and to bring something new and interesting to the story. However it's not really an Enter the Dragon remake anymore is it?
