Return to Castle Wolfenstein the movie
Roger Avary is turning back to the world of videogames for his next project, and that isn't Silent Hill 2. This time he's going to look to the videogame that came before the Doom series, Castle Wolfenstein. Luckily though he's not looking at the first game, Wolfenstein 3D, but he's looking at the more modern Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
In the videogame industry it's easy. Take the core of the game and just change the characters looks, outfits, maps, creatures, weapons, and boom, brand new game. In Hollywood we have to hope they don't follow the same model and turn the film Doom straight into Castle Wolfenstein.
However, hold up a minute, for all the haters of Doom (Filmstalker review) out there you have to admit it was good entertainment. If there are so many people screaming that the disjointed and poorly told Transformers (Filmstalker review) is so good, why can't they admit that Doom was good entertainment? After all the only thing to separate them is the level of CGI, and perhaps the story of Doom was slightly more cohesive and flowing.
However there's a great addition to the Castle Wolfenstein project already, in the form of Roger Avary, who is not only going to write the film but he's also going to direct it. He has also written Silent Hill and Driver, two other hot videogame properties.
”I’ve been playing the character of B.J. Blazkowicz since the epic ‘Wolfenstein 3D’ first bruised my brain and have ever since wanted to bring his adventures to life on the bigscreen...It’s time to bust some dams, storm some bunkers and blow up some bridges.”
Is how Avary talked about it in Variety yesterday. Well he's pretty much set the tone for the film, it's not going to be rocket science, it's going to be what it is.
I think with Avary at the helm it has a chance to be something interesting and entertaining. What do you think? Is there a film in there to be had, or is it just another poor videogame adaptation?
