Ridley Scott is making Monopoly!
Ridley Scott has confirmed that he's making a Monopoly film. There, I just came out and said it despite how ridiculous it sounds. The rumour came out a few months back and I could hardly believe it then, but now it appears to be true.
"...it's really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family -- the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and -- in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what's it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You're witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film."
The thing that instantly springs to mind is some kind of comedy chase caper, you know the film that's been done a few times before about a group of different people racing off to try and reach or find some goal, usually money, and comedy ensues...well, according to the filmmakers anyway.
There's going to have to be a lot of work on the idea though, and Scott's comments from the L.A. Times through Empire are surpising to say the least.
Instantly it reeks of merchandising and trying to shoehorn an existing revenue stream into a new channel, something that Hollywood keeps trying to do with videogames and for the most part failing. What they have to do is find a real story for it, and I agree with Scott on that part. Unless there's a real story in there, the film will be rubbish. So what could it possibly be?
