Shake Hands with the Devil on UK DVD

ShakeHandswiththeDevil.jpgThe UK DVD release of Shake Hands with the Devil is due on the 3rd of September, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it without ever having seen it. You see I've read the book, perhaps one of the most harrowing and emotionally stirring books I've ever read, a book that had me connecting with the author like no other book I've ever read, and one which woke me up to terrible atrocities around the world that so many want to hide.

Shake Hands with the Devil is the account of the UN Commander on hand in Rwanda during the genocide in the country, and of the UN and the Worlds failings to help the people who were being slaughtered. All the while the UN countries bickered over the use of the term genocide and tried to ignore and hide the actual events, supplying inadequate equipment, even out of date food.

I urge you to read the book (Amazon.co.uk / Amazon.com) if you haven't already, and watch out for the film which is coming from Roger Spotiswoode.

First though the documentary Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire is set to arrive in the UK on DVD with some interesting extras. From DVD Times:

Commentary by director Peter Raymont
Commentary by TV host Geoff Pevere

I'm slightly disappointed that there's not more from General Dellaire himself, however the Director's commentary and the book reading are going to make excellent additions to the DVD.

This will make an excellent companion to the film Shake Hands with the Devil which is already marked as completed on IMDB and stars Roy Dupuis as General Dallaire and Deborah Kara Unger.

Seriously, buy the book, not just to learn of the terrible events in Rwanda, or the failure of the UN (again), but to read of Dallaire's personal journey and the struggle he undertook. There are some great people in this world.
