Filmstalker: Voltron gets greenlit

Another giant robot film is getting the go ahead, although this one sounds more like Power Rangers than anything. Voltron is the story of five survivors of an alien attack team up and pilot five lion like robots that join up to make one giant, sword wielding robot.

Woo. Sounds exciting - Lace that statement with heavy Scottish sarcasm. I really don't see the appeal of this and it does sound more Power Rangers than anything. Wouldn't they be better making a Robotech film?

Anyway, the Voltron script was reviewed online recently and did really well for it, and I remain totally unconvinced. New Regency haven't though and they've are close to signing the deal to create a live action Voltron: Defender of the Universe film.

According to Variety Justin Marks has been writing the script for Mark Gordon's production company. Interestingly Gordon is also producing the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe film as well as Street Fighter.

I don't see the excitement really, if there's going to be another robot film then it's either a better Transformers (Filmstalker review) or Robotech, not this lion-robot thing Voltron.

How can you say this sounds like Power Rangers? What I think you mean to say is that Power Rangers (which came out in the 1990s) is a blatant rip-off of Voltron, which was released in the US in the 1980s, and even earlier in Japan.

This show was, hands down, my favorite show of my childhood, and I have been unbelievably excited since I first heard that I movie may be in the works. For at least some of us who grew up in the 80's, this is a dream come true.

Lord above, the fallout of the success of the abominable Transformers movie is that more kiddie robot shows are going to be shoehorned into feature films. The only thing that TransF had going for it was the A-List special effects which I'm sure the lesser clones (Voltron, GoBots, etc.) will be lacking.

Ugggh.

Marck I didn't mean to say any such thing, you did, I didn't. I said exactly what I meant. To me Power Rangers embodies everything about these series I hate, silly kids in tight costumes with motorbike helmets and silly looking alien robots that are in the form of Earth animals that for some reason link together to form a big human shaped robot. Yuk.

I much prefer robot shows like Robotech that have a bit more reality and practical-ness to them. Not that much, but a bit more!

You're right Kurt. When one film works, the studio leap on the genre...prepare yourselves.

Yeah but Johnny 5 is evil, hundred foot tall, and is built from twelve other robots in the shape of meercats.
