Closing Credits: Joey Bishop
The last of the Rat Pack has died. Joey Bishop was the last remaining member of the Rat Pack still alive after Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Sinatra in 1998.
For film audiences, The Rat Pack are best known for their two films Sergeants 3, and most notably Ocean's Eleven which received a remake from a group the media would love to be known as the new Rat Pack, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.
The CNN report tells us that The Rat Pack was originally a group of guys that surrounded Humphrey Bogart, but together they became a huge hit in the 1960's in Las Vegas with their shows that combined humour and music. If you've never heard them you really should because they are great entertainment.
Frank Sinatra said that Joey Bishop was the hub of the group on stage and got all the best lines and cracking jokes. Most though, will remember the Rat Pack for Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. with Peter Lawford and Bishop taking somewhat backseat roles in people's memories.
Of the group he famously responded to a question about them being drinkers and chasing women:
“Are we remembered as being drunk and chasing broads?...I never saw Frank, Dean, Sammy or Peter drunk during performances. That was only a gag. And do you believe these guys had to chase broads? They had to chase 'em away.”
Thankfully the Rat Pack has seen a huge revival of late, and let's hope they stay with us for a long time to come.
