Gilliam's Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus

TerryGilliam.jpgTerry Gilliam's next film has been confirmed and is currently in pre-production, what's more than that is that there's a concept picture about the film online as well as some pretty impressive casting news.

I actually had no idea about The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus until I heard this news, and it's great to hear that Terry Gilliam is going to make another film, now we just have to hope this one completes and we get to see it released.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is, well, it's a story that is probably best told through the blurb from the Deams site through Empire:

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day.

It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality.

Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this 'coming of age' milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls.

Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles - and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all...”

So that's the blurb, and if you head to that site you'll also get to see the piece of concept art for the film as well as some casting photos. Before you head there, here are the names:

Heath Ledger as Tony, Christopher Plummer as Dr Parnassus, Verne Troyer as Percy, Andrew Garfield as Anton, Lily Cole as Valentina and Tom Waits as Mr Nick.

Seems like an interesting cast, but what most catches my eye is Heath Ledger and the superb Christopher Plummer – boy do I love seeing this amazing actor on screen, and I feel slightly embarrassed to say that it was Star Trek: The Final Frontier that really made me notice him.

What do you think about Terry Gilliam then? Is he a genius of cinema, or do you find that everything he's done is overrated? Where do you fall with the creative mind of the ex-Python?

I really do like Gilliam's films. I like his style and the stories which he visually displays on film. I bought Tideland not too long ago and it really struck a chord with me. I felt like a kid on a 1930s Ferriss Wheel not sure what I'm doing on it, but enjoying it nevertheless.

I like the sound of this story. Good luck Gilliam!
