Portman joins Brothers remake

NataliePortman.jpgNatalie Portman is set to join the remake of Susanne Bier's Danish war film Brødre (Brothers) which has already gained the talents of both Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The original film was powerful, and really did hit a nerve on the effects of war on the individual, as well as those left at home. Now that we have three great actors on the film, this could turn out as strong as the original.

Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed up to play the Brothers, one who is sent to war in Afghanistan and captured, and the other who has just been released from prison wastes his life on drink and feeling sorry for himself.

However when the brother in Afghanistan is captured and presumed dead, the other brother cleans up his act and begins to look after the family, becoming a respectable man and beginning to care for the family that isn't his, and all the time we flash back to Afghanistan where the other brother is alive and enduring torture and horrible confinement.

I liked the original film and there is scope for improvement with a remake, but the actors have a lot to live up to after the performances of Connie Nielsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays the younger brother with Tobey Maguire playing the older, I am presuming that means Maguire goes to war and Gyllenhaal stays at home, if the new story is true to the original that is, and Natalie Portman will play the wife left at home and believing that her husband is dead.

The casting news from IESB certainly is very strong, now for word on the director.
