Sugar Ray Leonard biographical film
Perhaps Hollywood is taking a break from biographies of musicians as an announcement comes today that Sugar Ray Leonard is to have a biographical film made of his life.
Sugar Ray Leonard is a living legend, being one of only two boxers to have been world champion in five different weight classes, presumably not at the same time! He won several WBC and WBA championships and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. He was one of the great names of boxing through the 1970's and 1980's.
Leonard has a career of forty fights, thirty-six wins which twenty-five of were by knockout, three losses and one draw. Impressive indeed.
Through Variety, Leonard reveals that they've tried to get his approval for a film many times before, but now this looks like the right time.
"I have been approached many times in the past regarding my life story, and I believe Red Bird Cinema has the perfect group of collaborators to give my story the right voice."
Redbird Cinema is also developing Bissinger's book Three Nights in August which Pollak has adapted. The story looks at a three-game baseball series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in 2003. No real surprise there as the partners in the company are producer John Loar and the St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.
I'd look forward to a Sugar Ray Leonard film, for me he's a great boxer and athlete with a superb set of beliefs that hasn't really come to light until recent years. I knew little of him during his career, and it has only been recently I've come to know his on screen story.
