Thundercats gains director
I honestly struggle with the idea of seeing Thundercats on screen, and at least they've made one decision right up front, it is to be computer generated and not live action.
However we were waiting on word of a Director which has now arrived, and he's new to film.
Jerry O'Flaherty is the man lined up for the task. Now you may be wondering who he is, but in videogame circles he's a bit better known than in film, for this is his debut in directing, in fact according to his IMDB profile, in film at all.
Previously he worked as Art Director on games such as Command and Conquer, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3.
According to Variety though, he's been looking to make a move to directing for some time.
"It feels like a natural thing for me to step into...Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience."
Paul Sopocy is lined up to write the script for the film of Thundercats, the adaptation of the eighties cartoon series which saw a group of humanoid cats escaping the destruction of their home world Thundera. They crash land on a planet called Third Earth and make instant enemies of a creature called Mumm-Ra who is determined to kill them and get the power of their leader's sword which incorporates the eye of Thundera.
I really don't know about this one. I think it's going to be a very difficult film to make work, unless they are deliberately going for a younger audience. It's one of these that I think is very much of its time, but then so was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It's going to be more interesting though as it's been given to someone who is not only new to film, but is coming from a videogame background where the cut scenes and story are moving closer and closer to cinema experiences themselves - could this be a positive move for both the film and Jerry O'Flaherty?
