Angels & Demons postponed due to Writer's strike
Well it's not the first casualty of the Writer's strike as there have been TV shows postponed and we had word from Roger Avary that Return From Castle Wolfenstein was postponed due to the strike, but it is perhaps the first big budget Hollywood film to blame it's delay on the strike.
The studio has decided that the script for the film needs further work, and with that Akiva Goldman is needed to get writing. However the strike means that he can't, and the film is delayed.
Columbia released a statement through Reuters and Yahoo News that explains their decision.
“While the filmmakers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully realized production draft required of this ambitious project...At this time, there is no new start date, but we are setting a release date of May 15, 2009.”
Frankly I'm surprised that more films aren't being publicly halted and blamed on the strike as that would be the kind of publicity that the studios would want to heap against the Writers.
Columbia were actually quick to do the opposite and stated that they did not expect the rest of their slate to be affected, and that includes Bond 22.
Quite honestly though, I'm not that concerned that the film is delayed, if it's anything like The Da Vinci Code (Filmstalker review), then it'll be a faithful and very exact replication of the book on screen and there will be no tension or surprise to be had. However, I think there is more scope for this adaptation to stray from the original novel, particularly as there isn't such a big hype over this as there was with Da Vinci Code.
