L.A. and Boston Critics award winners

Two critics associations have weighed in with their start to the awards season in America, and both have some big surprises in store.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association have announced their winners, along with the Boston Film Critics Association, and there's little consensus between them...only two awards in fact.

Here are the L.A. Critics Awards through Associated Press and Yahoo News:

Best Picture:
There Will Be Blood
Runner-up: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Best Director:
Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood
Runner-up: Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Best Actor:
Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood
Runner-up: Frank Langella for Starting Out in the Evening

Best Actress:
Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose
Runner-up: Anamaria Marinca for 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days

Best Supporting Actor:
Vlad Ivanov for 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
Runner-up: Hal Holbrook Into the Wild

Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Ryan for Gone baby Gone and Before the devil knows you're dead
Runner-up: Cate Blanchett for I'm Not There

Best Screenplay:
Tamara Jenkins for The Savages
Runner-up: Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood

Best Cinematography:
Janusz Kaminski for The Diving Bell and the butterfly
Runner-up: Robert Elswit for There Will Be Blood

Best Production Design:
Jack Fisk for There Will Be Blood
Runner-up: Dante Ferretti for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Best Music Score:
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for once
Runner-up: Jonny Greenwood for There Will Be Blood

Best Foreign-Language Film:
4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days directed by Cristian Mungiu
Runner-up: "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" directed by Julian Schnabel

Best Documentary/Non-Fiction Film:
No end in sight directed by Charles Ferguson
Runner-up: Sicko directed by Michael Moore

Best Animation:
Ratatouille directed by Brad Bird and Persepolis directed by Vincent Parannaud and Marjane Satrapi

The Douglas Edwards Experimental/Independent Film/Video Award:
Colossal Youth directed by Pedro Costa

New Generation Award:
Sarah Polley Away From Her

Legacy Film Award:
Milestone films and Outfest Legacy project

Career Achievement Award:
Sidney Lumet

Special Citations:
The new crowned hope series celebrating the anniversary of Amadeus Mozart's Birth

No Country For Old Men

Best Actor:
Frank Langella for Starting Out in the Evening

Best Actress:
Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose

Best Supporting Actor:
Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men

Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone

Best Director:
Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Best Screenplay:
Brad Bird for Ratatouille

Best Cinematography:
Janusz Kaminski for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Best Documentary:
Crazy Love

Best Foreign-Language Film:
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Best New Filmmaker:
Ben Affleck for Gone Baby Gone

Best Ensemble Cast:
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

There's not a lot of agreement to be had between them, in fact it's only Marion Cotillard's performance that they agree on for Best Supporting Actress, the others are all over the place.

Good news for Ben Affleck and Gone Baby Gone, this could be the start of something special for him, and I'm also pleased to see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly receiving a lot of recognition.

I am surprised that the list is so diverse and then we see Ratatouille doing so well on the screenplay front though.
