WETA hopes for Neon Genesis Evangelion

EVA.jpgOne of the projects on WETA's list is a live action adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion, or NGE, or Eve, however according to WETA themselves the project has been put on hold but they aren't committing it to the bin just yet.

The film would be adapting the long running anime series, and was originally announced in May 2003. However it was put on hold in late 2005 and rumours around late 2006 had major casting and announcements being made.

Over at the WETA Workshop site there are a number of images to give some idea of the production design, and they talk a little about the adaptation.

“Weta has been designing a live-action adaptation of Neon Genesis: Evangelion. The film is on hold but it is Weta's hope that it will enjoy getting to work on the film production of this amazing story in the near future.”

It's been a long time since anything was heard about the project, but the images are rather promising.

Myself I can't even remember hearing anything about the series or the film, so I'm a bit in the dark and have had to rely on Wikipedia for the film and anime information.

Is it something we're ever going to see made, or is it another project that has definitely been consigned to the lost cause drawer of WETA along with Halo?
