Butler voices Watchmen's Black Freighter

GerardButler.jpgGerard Butler has confirmed that he will be appearing in the DVD release of Watchmen in the Tales of the Black Freighter, a comic which features in the Watchmen story and parallels some important aspects of the plot and character development.

However he's only voicing the character as, perhaps quite obviously, the accompanying film will be animated. Not only that but this is the first announcement that is clearly going against the original Watchmen comic as we discover the style of the film.

Gerard Butler has been rumoured to be involved in the Watchmen project for some time, but it was clear that there just weren't major roles for him to take up. Zack Snyder did however reveal that he was looking to cast the actor as the lead in the comic within the comic, The Tales of the Black Freighter, and that this would appear as an additional extra on the DVD release of Watchmen, not in the main film.

We never heard any more from it again, until now, until Gerard Butler himself revealed that he's going to be voicing the lead character in an animated version of the Black Freighter story, and that it will be in the style of Japanese anime, now that is different from the original Watchmen.

Through Empire, Gerard Butler says:

“I’m going to do the voice of the captain...They’re going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime and I’m totally stoked.”

Well that's right from the Scotsman's mouth. In an anime style? Really, I'm not terribly concerned with that, and it probably fits better these days, however it is the first real deviation from the original story we've seen, the good news is that this is additional material on the DVD and everything else we've heard about the main film is sticking to the original like glue.

“I actually read the script before reading the comic book and I thought it was awesome...Then I read the comic book and it’s great. The little bits that have been added define it so much more. It’s very dark and there’s just something so descriptive and scary. It’s this descent into madness but explained in such a sane way that you totally feel it yourself. By the end, my heart was pumping!”

Okay, forget the Black Freighter story now, just reading Butler's description of the Watchmen script has me excited - "very dark", "descent into madness...explained in such a sane way"? Oh those are excellent quotes and have me thinking that this could be really exciting and really huge, much bigger than we might have first thought.

Back to the Freighter though, Gerard Butler is a great choice for the voice of the character, but I'm just not sure about the move to anime.
