Another Bob Marley biographical film
The Weinstein Company, which already fills me with dread, have bought the rights to the book No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley by the widow of the famous musician, Rita Marley. They plan to develop a biographical film about the hugely influential musician as seen through her eyes.
The book covers their relationship starting from 1966, so it's not entirely clear if this will be more on the star or more on the relationship itself.
The story from Variety tells us that the relationship suffered many breakups and affairs as well as the birth of four children together and ten other legally recognised children fathered by Bob Marley. Apparently there are claims that could mean that he fathered up to twenty two children. It should even cover his attempted assassination in 1976.
The story has been courted many times before by Hollywood but Rita Marley says that the offers have never been satisfactory, until now.
Meanwhile a documentary about Bob Marley from Martin Scorsese is underway which is due for release in 2010.
Considering the differences in release dates there's not a lot of issue about there being two different films about the musician, but there will be an interest to see if there are any differences in the stories. Myself though, I'm not so interested in hearing about the relationship or the wife, I'd rather hear the story of the rise of the musician and his talent, and that's something to hear from the documentary I think.
