G.I. Joe for fans only?

GIJoe.jpgI find it hard to get excited about G.I. Joe at the best of times, but hearing the Executive Producer, Brian Goldner, talk about the film's plot line just makes me confused and I find myself wondering if this is going to be for die hard fans only.

The best news, apparently, is that it won't be taking any notice of the television versions of the story and will head right back to the comic. Now I believe that's good, but listening to the comments I'm wondering if anyone not totally familiar with G.I. Joe is going to follow it.

Goldner says of the G.I. Joe film over at MTV through JoBlo:

"We all really loved what G.I. Joe was about in the '80s; we loved that story arc and the concept of Joe vs. Cobra...

...We all know of the Arashikage [ninja clan], and we all know of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, but we need to build that story... We all know the story of Duke, and the story of the Baroness. ... We know the story of Destro, but do we really? We need to go back and tell the origin story of how you get a Scottish arms dealer, who comes forward in history - how does that happen?

...In effect, this is all about the rise of Cobra Commander. ... For fans, they're really going to love this, because we take them on a journey. ... We have to go through the first chapter and then build from there."

Now none of that really makes much sense to me. I find myself wondering what they are talking about for the most part, and then he even says that fans will really love this, I wonder if non-fans will too?

Perhaps they'll find it too hard to deal with all these characters whose back story is just ignored and taken for granted that the audience know? Big name cast or not.

Rich, I wouldn't worry to much about all the bild up. Yes, die hard Joe fans know exactly what was just listed there, but it also states that they have to show that, so this will be good for the new comers. These will be very important in knowing some of the relationships between characters (Snake Eyes + Storm Shadow, Destro + Baroness). We have to understand what makes these characters turn into global terrorists and why they follow Cobra Comander. We also need to know why Cobra Comander is doing any of this.

As long as they take their time and don't try to mash 10 punds into a 5 pound sack, it should be fine.

I'm not really worried, just not interested, and I'm concerned that the more they work to appeal to the fans the more they are losing people like me.

i'm very interested in the movie, but you know what? i'm with you, Richard. i have no earthly idea what the heck he's talking about. I only watched the tv series, and to be honest, in all the friends i had in America, i have NEVER known ANYONE who EVER read a single G.I. Joe comic. matter of fact, if someone gave the average kid a comic in a brown bag, and they were excited, then pulled out a GIJoe rag, you would be able to see the excitement melt right off their face into a look of "what the hell am i supposed to do with this"?

in short, this is a mistake. they should make a light hearted romp of a patriotic action movie with cookie cutter but likeable characters, noble sacrifice, and a decent story.

there already was an excellent animated GIJoe movie from the '80's. seriously, check THAT out. it'll tell you everything you really need to know....about joe...
