X-Files 2 plot surprise and Millennium film?

X-Files.jpgChris Carter has been talking about the coming X-Files 2 film, and he's revealed the very thinnest of hints about the plot, something that has been concerning me for some time, and while it doesn't alleviate my fears it does suggest that they might just be unfounded.

He also reveals that there are problems over the title and that he really wants to make a Millennium film.

Chris Carter was talking at a press panel through Sci Fi Wire and he revealed that the previous mythology of the film will:

“...not go unconsidered in the movie.”

Now while that doesn't mean that X-Files 2 will cover the alien mythology that carried through the entire series and was the basis of the first film, nor will they round it off nicely, it does suggest that they are at least going to recognise that it's all happened/happening.

Frank Spotnitz also revealed a little and went on to address this issue that really has me concerned about the sequel:

“...while this not a mythology movie, it's true to everything that's come before. It's true to Mulder and Scully, who they are, where they would be at this point in their lives and all of the experiences that they've had.”

He does say that they are going to honour the fans and their love for the show while trying to capture a new audience too, and to me this sounds like we're going to have the alien mythology all nicely sewn up quite early on, which could well be a big disappointment, or it could work superbly and we'll be onto a creature film very quickly.

What's surprising is that in 2002 the story was already written for the sequel, and it wasn't the mythology either. However come time that the sequel was finally greenlit, all the details of the original were lost and they had to start again with the bare bones idea and their memories, and they say that turned out a better story than before.

You know I'm really not sure, right now this could go either way, but I am willing to give it a go. I just wish they would tidy up the alien storyline once and for all, and do it well too, not just in the first ten minutes of a film about something else.

Carter also mentioned that he is currently discussing with the studio what the title should be. He knows what he wants it to be, but the studio want to call it something else, something he obviously doesn't agree with as he says he knows what it should be.

What caught my eye in this story though is the mention of a Millennium film, remember the series with Lance Henriksen that had a much darker and stronger feel to it than anything they'd done before. Chris Carter seems keen on the idea, as does Lance Henriksen himself:

“We've talked about that over the years...Lance would love to do it. I don't know if it would ever get done. It's a long shot. It would be fun. I have ideas about how to do it.”

Oh, I would love to see that happen, but could that story really work now, and would it have to radically change format and focus for a feature film?
