Babylon A.D. cut rumours denied?

BabylonAD.jpgWere the rumours about Babylon A.D. being harshly edited just internet rumours? Well not fully, but a statement has been issued on the film blog about the cuts and reveal something a little more realistic.

There's still a cut being made in the UK, but it looks like it's more around the ten minute mark. Read on for the official comments.

You'll remember that the runtime was put at somewhere around one hundred and sixty minutes before, and that has been put down to a joke made by the director of the film Mathieu Kassovitz in front of some journalists, a joke indeed, that must have been hilarious for all concerned, but I can't see what kind of a joke that would be other than bring concern that the film would be too long and boring.

No matter, the quote goes on to say that Babylon A.D. never had a cut near that length and that it was actually around one hundred minutes, so yes there are cuts for the UK audience, but only ten minutes. Still, ten minutes is quite a bit for a cut from territory to territory, but that does match the rumour we heard about the films actual length.

Apparently though the 12/PG-13 was an agreed rating that they were going for and was in the contract from the beginning. Here's what the comments say, and watch how the denial changes to Fox having their final cut on the territory releases.

"Babylon AD has never had a 2h40min cut. This rumor came from a joke Mathieu did in front of some journalists last september. Apparently some of them didn't understand it... The approximate length of the film is 1h40min and this is what has been delivered to our partner, FOX. So I can reassure you, FOX is not chopping up the film and cutting 70min like I read on Rotten Tomatoes ! :-)

Oh and about the PG13, that was a contractual agreement between Fox and us, so there is no surprise on that end.

The truth is Fox - like any other studio - will have their final cut on their territories and Mathieu Kassovitz has his on the European ones. So there will naturally be a few differences between the two versions."

You can read the full thing over at their MyMarketingSpace site thanks to Janine of VinXperience. However it doesn't look as bad as it first seemed. Sure there are cuts, but it would seem that they aren't as many as we were led to believe.

What do you think? Storm in a tea cup? Internet rumour? Rapid backtracking? Or is there a pinch of every side in the truth?
