Orlando Bloom in Johnnie To film?

OrlandoBloom.jpgWell here's something I never really expected, the appearance of Orlando Bloom in a Johnnie To film, and it's a remake of Le Cercle Rouge, The Red Circle, a powerful thriller that looks into the French criminal underworld and was made in 1972.

Although nothing has been signed yet, Orlando Bloom has appearently been offered the lead in the remake which the Hong Kong director Johnnie To will direct.

Now there's perhaps the strangest mix I've seen on a film so far. I thought Orlando Bloom was a little bit washed up and that the Pirates franchise didn't really do his career any favours after the first film.

Then there's the idea of Johnnie To remaking a French classic, but that's not so strange when you see the content of Le Cercle Rouge and of To's films. Election, Exiled, to name but two that start with the letter E, he's a very strong director noted for gangster and action films that carry a heavy thriller and dramatic aspect, something that sounds extremely well suited to the plot of The Red Circle, here's what IMDB say:

“Corey is a cool, aristocratic thief, released from prison on the same day that Vogel, a murderer, escapes from the custody of the patient Mattei, a cat-loving police superintendent. Corey robs Rico, his mob boss, then enlists Vogel and an ex-police sharpshooter, Jansen, in a jewel heist. While Corey is harried by the vengeful Rico, Mattei pressures Santi, a nightclub owner and pimp, to help him trap the thieves. Over all hangs the judgment of the police directeur, that every man is guilty”

According to the Empire story it's the role of Corey that Orlando Bloom has been offered. It's a great move for Bloom and I hope he takes it, because he needs to shake that Pirates persona off his back, as well as the idea that he's too light and doesn't carry enough dramatic punch in his recent roles.

Hold up though, the story doesn't end there, apparently Chow Yun-Fat and Liam Neeson are also in negotiations for the film. Now that would be one cracking cast. Watch out for this one.
