Cloverfield sequel may have to wait

JJAbrams.jpgA sequel to Cloverfield is not certain yet it would seem. Despite casting rumours already starting, and a deal apparently signed, J.J. Abrams may have other plans first.

While doing publicity for his new TV show Fringe, J.J. Abrams spoke about where things were with the Cloverfield sequel. Through scifi wire he said:

We're talking about it. But the truth is there's another idea that I'd rather do with the same people than do a sequel. It's a whole new thing. So my dream is to work with [Goddard and Reeves] again, but do something that's [new]. Having said that, Drew and Matt both, separately, have really good ideas for what [Cloverfield 2] could be. So I don't know. We'll see. I know the studio wants it.

Well of course the studio wants it. Is that the sound of cash registers ringing? Last we heard a deal had been signed, and we had already heard some casting rumours. Maybe Abrams just wants to wait a bit longer, and not rush into it. Given the prolonged viral marketing campaign for the first, maybe that's a good idea. I'd like to know what the new project idea is though. What about you, do you want a Cloverfield sequel as soon as possible? Or is there such a thing as too soon?

John: Oh, yeah? Why not?
Tony: Because you're a policeman, there are rules for policemen.
