Christian Bale on Batman and Heath Ledger
Christian Bale has been talking about the Batman experience, working with Heath Ledger and a lot of other stuff in a magazine interview. With The Dark Knight release getting closer, Bale talked to Details magazine.
The interview covers a range of other topics, including his thoughts when making Empire of the Sun, and American Psycho. No inside word on Terminator 4 though, damn.
I was standing on the back lot where they were creating the suit, and I had a few minutes to myself, staring up close in the mirror, just thinking, "This isn't going to work. I'm claustrophobic, I can't breathe, I'm getting a headache already, and this is all going to go very badly."
Obviously he managed to talk himself round though. One of the most interesting comments in the interview was on Heath Ledger's performance.
He was incredibly intense in his performance but incredibly mellow and laid-back. Certainly there was this great anarchistic streak to it—just getting dirtier than anybody's envisioned the Joker before. This character has power because he has no limits—absolutely nothing to lose.And on how Ledger's death had affected his outlook on the film, he said;
Naturally it was something I wanted to share with him—and expected to do so. And I can't do anything else but hope that it will be an absolutely appropriate celebration of his work.
From the trailers we've seen, Ledger's performance as The Joker is one of the things I'm most looking forward to in The Dark Knight. This one could be the best Batman film yet. You can read the whole of the interview here, through superherotype.
