Favreau/Marvel stuck on money?
Just yesterday we wrote that Marvel had come up with a release date for Iron Man 2. This was news to the director of the first Jon Favreau, who posted on his message board that it was too soon. He would like more time in order to do a good job, assuming he is ever attached to direct the sequel.
Well now an insider says that the main reason for Favreau not already being signed for the sequel, is that old favourite, money. Marvel seem to think they can do a great Iron Man 2 without Jon Favreau.
With Marvel announcing an April 2010 release date for Iron Man 2, we heard from Jon Favreau that nether he or Robert Downey Jr had been consulted. He feels it is too soon, and that time should be taken in order to get a good film. He also said:
It’s been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.
It could be though that things are not quite as amicable as he would have us believe. IESB say they have spoken to two insiders at Marvel. They say that David Maisel, who is in charge of negotiating Favreau's contract for Marvel Studios, is trying to get Favreau on the cheap. I guess despite the good job he did, they still feel is inexperienced enough to not be demanding a large fee. But the insiders also say that Favreau is only asking for the standard director's fee, not a huge pay rise.
If this is true it could be a big mistake on Marvel's part. Favreau seems to have pleased the large majority of fans with Iron Man. And it's no coincidence that Marvel announced just after the release, that they would be making a lot more Marvel films. This could just be the usual negotiating that goes on behind the scenes, or it could be that Marvel are about to make themselves very unpopular.
Having reinvented Iron Man on the big screen, surely Marvel should be bending over backwards to get both Favreau and Robert Downey Jr back. Are they mad? Or just plain greedy? I suppose time will tell , but it's not looking promising at the minute.
