Hefner wants Downey Jr

RobertDowneyJr.jpgThe Hugh Hefner bio pic has been ongoing for a while now, with Brett Ratner directing and Brian Grazer producing. A number of actors have been linked to the role of Hefner, but the most recent one has been Robert Downey Jr.

Now Hefner has added his blessing, and said that he and Grazer are pursuing Downey Jr for the role.

Playboy chief Hugh Hefner says that they are close to finishing a screenplay and Robert Downey Jr is the man they want to play him.

I guess the next big thing we're looking forward to is the movie and we're hoping that Robert Downey Jr. will be portraying me, Brian Grazer is producing. Brett Ratner is directing. We're finishing up the screenplay and hope to have to be in production by the end of the year.

Hefner was speaking to Coming Soon, and also elaborated on the reasons that he wants Downey Jr.

..because he's a very good actor. It has nothing to do with Iron Man. Our conversations with Robert were in the months immediately before Iron Man. He called immediately after Iron Man and asked 'When we were going to do the movie?'...He's a great actor and he embodies the characters.

I wouldn't disagree with him there. He would do a great job of playing Hugh Hefner. The film will concentrate on the beginning of Playboy in the 50's thorough to the mid 1970's, rather than his whole life.

Originally, in the first draft it was covering everything, which proved impossible. It would make a good mini-series. It's going to cover the launch of the magazine which is about 1952-1953 to the middle of the 1970s.

I don't know about you, but I can see Downey Jr doing a great job in that role. I could see him in that smoking jacket, draped with ladies in various states of undress. What do you think, should it be Downey Jr? Or is there someone else who could better embody the Hef in his heyday?
