The Three Musketeers restart
The Three Musketeers have enjoyed a couple of outings, but for me the most enjoyable were the Richard Lester directed films starring a huge line up of stars. Now though, they're thinking of returning to the series, not for a remake though, but a restart of the franchise before these films took place.
The idea is to visit the Musketeers before the arrival of D'Artagnan, and discover how they came together initially. So at least it isn't a remake, more a restart or reboot.
The new film comes from the studio who brought us the new Rambo and are restarting Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja, as well as Variety telling us that they are also restarting Hercules and Buck Rogers - are these becoming film or television properties?
Either way The Three Musketeers is restarting and there's already talk of the franchise.
"D'Artagnan, the last member of the eventual quartet, will either be introduced later in the first movie or in a second installment."
A second film already? Well if they get it right then they could have a great franchise on their hands, after all the Richard Lester versions are great fun to watch and still enjoyable to this day. The question really is can they recapture that sense of adventure and fun, or will they try for an update and inject more action, adventure and danger into it?
Personally I don't think anything can come close to those originals, they were fantastic, and the amazing cast including Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Richard Chamberlain, Michael York, Frank Finlay, Christopher Lee, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Spike Milligan, Roy Kinnear, Faye Dunaway, Charlton Heston, Joss Ackland and Sybil Danning was just spectacular. I presume the new cast will be far from the established names and talen that we've seen before.
Regardless The Three Musketeers is returning for most likely more than one film, and with that we're going to see a new Hercules and Buck Rogers in some form...now those will be worth waiting for. Buck Rogers remade in a Battlestar Galactica vein would be amazing, however I'm not so sure about The Three Musketeers.
