Filmstalker: Hairspray 2?

Yet another musical movie in the wings, this time it's also a sequel to a remake, or a sequel to a reimagining, not sure which one it comes under. Following last years Hairspray starring Nikki Blonsky, John Waters has been asked to write a treatment for a sequel.

Not being a huge musical fan (my only experience of Rocky Horror is Richard's drunken singing) I'm not sure if this is good news or not.

According to Variety, through Rope of Silicon, New Line Cinema have asked John Waters to come up with a treatment for a sequel to Hairspray. The film would follow on from the last one, and catch up with the family again.

Due back for the sequel are director Adam Shankman and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, they will also be writing new songs for the sequel. They also hope to get all the main cast members back including John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney. Problem being that it would seem none of them had sequels in their contract, so it may take a while.

Any Hairspray fans out there? Did you like last years version? Do you want to see another?

I absolutely loved the Hairspray musical movie (I like the original but I'm not as keen on it). I think that a Hairpsray 2, could be a good move providing they can get the same cast! I would say I hope it doesn't turn out like Grease 2 but....I secretly liked that too.

I loved the first hairspray and a second one could be great or it could be a flop....i doubt it will though providing all the cast are back and the songs are still fabulous. I think they're on to a winner here!!!

i think thats a good idea to do a second but they need all or at least half of the original cast back in order for it to be good.

i think it would be a great idea to bring hairspray 2 out i still watch hairspray loads now even tho it came owt last year but still i would love nikki blonsky to be in hairspray in it and zac efron but i reckon them to have to be in it cuz there the main characters so lets just hope there is a hairspray 2

hairspray 1 is great. we've seen it about 25 times in 2 weeks. that probably a record. they should definitely make hairspray 2. they are all excellent actors. please, please, please make hairspray 2. pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not for the idea.

Hairspray has a very strong message (if you look past the camp dance moves!) which I personally think is portrayed wonderfully. I think with a sequel, Hairspray would ruin its message, and the greatest ever musical ending EVER wouldn't be an ending. It would mean that Hairspray would change - not neccessarily for the better. Please, keep it as it is - the best a musical can get.

Well I loved Hairspray and all of a sudden I can't stop watching, it was random and everything.
I would maybe like second one. But it can't be like Grease 2, that turned into a flop.
The need at least;
Nikki, Zac, Amanda, Elijah, Brittany, Queen Latifah, an James to make it good!
It did send a good message and hopefully this will too.
