Batman 3 casting rumours
Look, they aren't real. Let's face it. We're seeing it time and time again as some site, paper or magazine claims that an “inside source” told them...blah blah, and yet no writer and/or director has signed up for a third Batman film, never mind Christopher Nolan, and that's where the casting choices will be made, not with supporting actors or inside sources.
So the rumours of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin and Johnny Depp as the Riddler are, right now, complete rumour and most possibly complete fabrication. Especially when we read the denials and shock from the actors themselves.
Of course the casting choices could be getting made right now by the studio and will be forced on the future writer and director, but I don't really believe that this will happen, especially not with the success of writer and director led The Dark Knight (Filmstalker review).
Philip Seymour Hoffman recently replied to the press led rumours, and he was very dismissive. In fact I think this is much better than a denial, which the press just instantly claim as an indication of truth anyway:
“No one has talked to me about it ever — never...It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”
He even reveals that he hasn't met Christopher Nolan.
He's a fan of comic book movies though, and he does say that what Nolan is doing with Batman is superb. He even goes as far to say that he's not likely ever to star in one as he's more of a fan – very well done Mr Hoffman, a politician would be proud. From MTV through Comic Book Movies:
“I’m such a fan of those movies...Comic book movies in general I look forward to — I am a real cheerleader for them. I want them to do well because those are terrific stories. As a kid I was a big comic book collector. What [Nolan]’s doing is taking it in a whole other exciting great place. I’m more a fan, so the interest of being in it isn’t that great. It’s more the interest in wanting to see the next one. It’s probably better that way...
...I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it. I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest.”
Okay, so there's no interest there at all, he's more of a fan. However wait a minute, TheStoneReport through WENN (no links given for either source story) and IMDB have a huge headline grabbing title saying “Hoffman: 'I'd Love To Play The Penguin'” and state that Hoffman can't wait for the call from Nolan.
Wait a minute though, take a look at the story and he doesn't say that at all, the quotes are very similar to the ones above and he doesn't say anything about wanting to play the part. Another fabricated news story perhaps?
I'm going with the quotes directly from Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the fact that we haven't seen a director, script, or even heard that there's an idea for another film.
Of course these things can happen behind the scenes and deals can be made, stories progressed, and it may well even be that the Nolan's have an idea in their head already for the next film, and of course actors will sign up for films if they've got a great track record in franchise and talent just on an idea.
Yet, I can't help thinking that in this film world of leaks and sources that we really would have heard if the Nolan's had already signed up and started the script, and we haven't. Even Christian Bale is saying that he won't be on board until he knows that Nolan is back on.
So I think, just now, these rumours are just that, rumours, and extremely hopeful ones at that.
