The International trailer online
So the trailer for the film The International has arrived. It stars Clive Owen, Naomi Watts (her hamster cheeks are cute), Armin Mueller-Stahl and Ulrich Thomsen and comes from director Tom Tykwer of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Run Lola Run, and Paris Je t’aime (Filmstalker review), so visual style is a big tick.
However looking at the trailer I'm a little disappointed. There are a few things that just don't work, sure there are some strong set-up scenes and great locations with cool shots, but...
What do I end up after watching it? A sense of a thriller, of one man going against a Bank that seems to be rather large and corrupt, perhaps indulging in some politics and political assassination, and a woman who has some kids tagging along. That's it.
However read the blurb and we find out that Clive Owen is playing an Interpol agent – where did I miss that in the trailer? - and that Naomi Watts is playing a Manhattan District Attorney. Somehow the D.A. becomes involved in this chase across the globe – I'm sure the Manhattan authorities aren't sanctioning her expenses on that – and they try to track down the illegal activities of the bank and shut it down.
Now where was that in the trailer? It just seems like the lone man with a gun protecting the innocent lady and trying to bring down the big bad guy to save her regardless as to what happens to him.
The trailer does seem to be giving something different from the film, and frankly I don't think it's the best cut for it, especially with what looks to be the opening to the final scene being shown, it's okay though, I doubt it's that much of a spoiler.
So bear that in mind when you go and watch it, and don't write it off on that basis, there is more to be had from it, particularly because of that strong cast and director.
