The Soloist trailer online
Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx are going for Oscar glory and ticking all the boxes they can in the film called The Soloist, a film based on a real life story about a reporter looking for a winning story comes across a down and out who played beautiful music on the streets.
The reporter befriends him, begins to write about him, and together they find something special in each other, and the reporter helps him realise his dreams of playing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
It ticks all the Oscar winning boxes though, let's see:
Man down on his luck turns his life around
White man befriends black man
Both men from different sides of the world
Upper middle class man finally sees homeless man for who he is
Well off man helps homeless man, and amazingly he ends up being helped by the homeless man without realising
Mentally disabled man makes good and realises his dreams
Well off man doesn't value friendship until something happens to the homeless man and he almost loses everything and finds himself
...and so on. You can see them all here, and to a degree it's so similar to so many other films. However, and this is a big however, it works.
It will have us all entranced and we'll all be weeping at the right moments. Plus it's got Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx in hugely dramatic roles, so we can expect a lot from it. However I wonder if Downey Jr. might have darkened his Oscar chances with that Tropic Thunder controversial comment? Regardless of that I think the supporting actor Oscar is going to Heath Ledger, because he died, so whoever is considered the lead here will have a chance of winning.
