I Am Legend prequel now a sequel?

IAmLegend.jpgLast we heard I Am Legend was getting a prequel film. Not a surprise considering the ending to the first. But now rumour has it that the prequel idea has been dumped.

Seems we could be seeing a sequel to I Am Legend instead. Confused? You're not the only one.

Following I Am Legend (Filmstalker review), the people involved decided on a prequel. The last news we heard Will Smith, Francis Lawrence and some other people were working on a plot. The film would show how Smith's character came to be the only survivor of a plague of vampire like mutants, created when a cancer vaccine turned bad.

Now AICN say they have heard a rumour that the prequel story may not happen, and that they have turned their attention to a sequel.

Let's start at the beginning. Smith is actually the one who developed the initial story. It took place several years before the original film and there were still pockets of survivors and the story centered around Smith interacting, bonding, and ultimately failing to save them. For months this was the story. Warner's didn't much care for it and Smith and Weiss eventually came on board and all parties agreed to change things up. Well this change is pretty insane, the film is no longer a prequel, it's a (expletive removed) sequel!

Now call me negative but the ending to the first pretty much rules out any Will Smith in a sequel. Unless he's there in flashbacks, or they use the alternative ending which was available on the DVD release. Surely that can't, having not used it in the cinema version.

I wasn't over the moon with a prequel idea in the first place. For me the first film pretty much said it all. It gave us enough of a backstory to know what happened, without overdoing it. And i guess a sequel would involve us seeing the rebuilding of mankind, but minus the atmosphere of the first probably. Neither option does it for me, I'd rather they left it alone.

What about you? Prequel, sequel or neither?

I disliked the first one so much that I'd prefer neither a prequel nor a sequel. I vote no!

I could see how a sequel could happen, but it just wouldn't be starring Smith!

The problem for me is that the theatrical release of the film also had a Hollywood ending that tainted the rest of the film, so starting from there isn't really a strong base.

Perhaps there's something about the serum and the work to start changing the creatures back? Still, that means no Smith, unless they go to the alternative ending.

I preferred the alternate ending as well. Unusual that they went for the one that ruled Smith out of a sequel, considering how much Hollywood likes them.
