Leonardo DiCaprio on Akira
Leonardo DiCaprio's production company is working on live action adaptations of Akira and Ninja Scroll. We recently posted a script review of the new version of Akira.
And now DiCaprio has given us a small update on where Akira is. And has also answered the question as to whether he is interested in starring in either.
Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way are making films of Akira and Ninja Scroll. We recently heard what some of the changes to the Akira story would be, based on a script review. And DiCaprio gave MTV Splashpage, through AICN an update on where they are.
We’re waiting for the final draft of the script [for 'Akira']. I’m a big fan of Japanese anime — that and another project called ‘Ninja Scroll’ we’re trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape.
Given DiCaprio's day job, one might have assumed he'd have a role of some sort in Akira. However when asked if he was interested in acting in either film, he had this to say.
No, not really.
Short but sweet. I've never seen the whole of Akira, but it does seem to me that the main attraction is the fact that it is an anime. I'm not sure I see the point in remaking something, in a different style to what made it individual in the first place. Won't it lose something in translation? Or could they improve anything? Do you Akira fans want a live action version?
