Ratner not on Conan yet

BrettRatner.jpgIt has been about a week, since Brett Ratner was supposed to have chosen Conan as his next project. But it seems it is a little premature to say that he will definitely be directing.

Ratner is not best pleased with the person who released the news early. This may not bode well for him actually agreeing.

It was the Hollywood Reporter who claimed that Brett Ratner would be directing Conan. They suggested that Ratner had chosen to direct Conan over Beverly Hills Cop 4. But now the producer who sent out the original press release has backtracked slightly:

We still have a few obstacles. Brett is only committed if we agree on a budget, on how to do the special effects and exactly where we'd shoot the film.

That was Avi Lerner talking to The Los Angeles Times, through Cinematical. They sound like fairly major stumbling blocks still. Who knows why he released the news before it was confirmed. They also spoke to the man himself, Brett Ratner. He sounds more than a little miffed, and has his sights set on Beverly Hills Cop 4 first.

Let me make this very clear. I am not doing 'Conan' now. This is totally premature. For now, 'Conan' is only a development deal. I have a deal at Paramount and I'm doing 'Beverly Hills Cop' first, no matter what. Avi shouldn't be telling you or anyone else in the press what I'm doing.

Relations seem a bit frosty after all that. There will be some smoothing over to do before he is confirmed on the film I imagine. Lerner meanwhile spoke about who they are looking for to star in Conan. And he was also hoping to get Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film, offering him $1 million for a one day cameo appearance.

To be honest, we're looking for a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger, someone we could sign to a three- or four-picture deal, because I see this as a real long-term franchise. I saw Arnold in Las Vegas at the premiere of 'Rambo.' He said, 'Wait two years for me--I'll be coming back.' But I can't wait that long.

So Brett Ratner will be teaming up with Eddie Murphy before any Conan film, and he isn't a cert to be doing that. And at some point in the Conan series we might see Arnie back, after his time as Governor of California is over. Do you want Ratner on Conan? Would you like to see Arnie back in a Conan film at some stage?
